Befriend Our New Facebook Page

Maybe the fastest way to get important public safety information to neighbors is to use Facebook.  Most people will go to Facebook sooner than checking this website.  Recently, in June, a man tried to force a woman into his car near Glen Armil Park.  Within hours this website had information (scroll down to find the original post) about the incident posted on our front page, but if you do not look at this website each day, you would not have gotten the timely information.  The media had information as well and the “Nextdoor” app also had information available.  For neighbors who are organized as neighborhood watch groups, the Facebook page should prove helpful.Spanish influence on house on LombardMake us a friend if you are on Facebook.  In the search box at the top of Facebook, enter Glen Armil Neighborhood Association.  Then invite others to befriend us as well.

The Facebook page will also feature, as all Facebook pages feature, a timeline to chronologically mark postings about our neighborhood. But beside public safety information, much civic information and social news can be posted there.  Comments also will be allowed, while presently comments are not allowed on the website.  So Glen Armil Neighborhood Association now offers two sponsored links for your convenience.  We also avail ourselves of the “Nextdoor” app, but GANA did not originate the connection to “Nextdoor” as a result we are connected with the Norwood Park neighbors in that grouping on “Nextdoor”.  The boundaries of Glen Armil/Norwood Park do not conform with the GANA by-laws.  As a result some information shared in posts on “Nextdoor” may not apply to the Glen Armil Neighborhood Association.  We will try to be very careful in distinguishing information through “Nextdoor”

City Government Seeking to be More Transparent

All departments of Davenport City government have to make monthly performance reports.  These reports will now be available for citizens to see. Curious about how many calls for service the Davenport Fire Department receives monthly or how much cash the city has on hand? To see those and other performance measures, go to https://performance.cityofdavenportiowa…..

As an example the reports of Police burglary statistics for the current year, burglaries have varied from a low of 59 in March to a high last month of 121.  It is clear that warm months are the busier time for burglars in our city.  Please be careful about open garage doors while you are out working in the yard.  If you are out in the yard it is probably a good idea to lock the doors to the house.  Burglars find opportunity all around.  For more tips on crime prevention visit other tabs on this site or visit the Davenport Police pages on the city web site.  Search “crime prevention.” garage door open

Holiday/Christmas lighting contest for Glen Armil

The Glen Armil Neighborhood Association announces the winners of the home lighting and decorating contest. The contest is simply to encourage civic pride and and recognize residents who celebrate the holiday season with festive decorations and lighting.  There were many decorations; we realized several categories, animated lighting, non animated lighting and finally a group prize for best block of homes.  Recognition is also given to displays on main streets, because they will be seen by more passers-by.  Homes in the GANA area from Locust to Central Park and from Marquette to Gaines were viewed.

Glen Armil Meeting Draws Attention to “Nextdoor”

GA yard signA Glen Armil Neighborhood Association election meeting was attended by only 8 people Monday evening.  The association by-laws indicate that at least 10 people need to be present for a quorum.  Nominations for board members, President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President are welcomed by contacting Jim Welch at [email protected]. Another election meeting will be scheduled early in 2016, until then, the existing officers will serve.  While not official the eight people present, consented to this idea.

Of interest during the meeting Linda Cook explained a new app/social media service called “Nextdoor”.  This allows neighbors to connect to each other via email much like the Glen Armil Association was trying to do with its email list.  There are advantages to “Nextdoor” over a simple email chain. If you want to join “Nextdoor-Glen Armil” which is confined to our neighborhood, watch for an invitation from neighbors or again contact Jim Welch for an invitation.  Besides discussions about crime in the neighborhood, some neighbors are asking about organizing neighborhood watch areas, while others are sharing tips on lighting your property.

Glen Armil yard signs available, see the photo above.  To build some community pride the GANA directors are offering a free yard sign with each 2016 Association membership.  For a family at a single address, the one year subscription just $10.  It is our hope that on certain significant days or holidays our neighborhood will display the signs to tell Davenport, “Hey look at our neighborhood.”  The first will be Thanksgiving weekend, Nov 26-29 weather permitting.

Summer Break-ins Affect Glen Armil

Davenport Police #1Mike Van Hulle lives in the 700 block of Rusholme and reports that someone or someones broke into his locked garage late Sunday or early Monday. Missing from the garage were three bikes. Since I first posted this report, I became aware of even more crime reports from Davenport PD and GANA residents.  Go to Crime Reports to keep advised on crime in the neighborhood. www.crimereports.com/services/crimedata/crime_list.html

Specifically, B&Es were reported in the 2100 block of Marquette, the 2100 block of Myrtle and in the alley behind the 1000 block of Rusholme where 5 garages were burgled in one night recently and bikes were the preferred booty.  also related to the Rusholme B&Es, a truck was briefly taken but later returned with a broken window.  Outside of our GANA boundaries but nearby more B&E’s were noted and two sexual assaults were reported, also.  6 B&Es were reported in the neighborhood in the last 30 days, making the month one of the most crime filled the neighborhood has experienced.  Summer is the preferred time to burgle residences, perhaps because of the perceived opportunities summer affords.

While we feel outraged that our neighborhood is the target of break-ins, it is a reminder to us all to secure our property at all times. If you are concerned about the safety of your property, you can arrange with Davenport PD to go over your home with an officer, and they can point out things that you can do to improve security. Deadbolt locks are an obvious improvement to a single doorknob, but if there is a window or sidelight of glass in or near the door, you may be better off with a doubled keyed deadbolt lock.  This requires a key to operate the lock inside as well as outside.  I am not suggesting Mike was negligent, only suggesting that this serve as a reminder to us all to do the best job we can to provide security.

deadboltNot every resident will share information about security issues with GANA, so we assume there has been other crime in our neighborhood this summer.  Please be a good neighbor and call 911 if you see anything suspicious.  911 is the number you must use even if you do not perceive the issue as an emergency.  The consolidated dispatch system tracks calls and the Davenport PD uses these calls to build statistics and plan strategy for fighting crime.  The dispatcher may answer with “What is your emergency?” Don’t let that deter you, calmly explain that this is not an emergency and state that you have seen individuals who look out of place and are acting suspiciously.  You may be asked to give a location and their description.  You can remain anonymous or you can give your name, you will not be pressured to give personal information.

Neighbor Uses Video to Help Capture Thief

Within the last month a man broke into a house in the 2400 block of Lillie.  The resident was not home when the intruder entered through a window and took valuables.  The home owners did have a digital security camera that captured the intruders likeness and he was eventually taken into custody.  The burglar was charged with violation of probation among other charges.  He will be spending years in prison as a result of his crimes.  It turns out the man had been casing the house and tried to enter the house through the front door a week earlier, when the homeowner was there.  She scared the thief off with her yelling and screaming.

The story shows that you can be home and still be a victim.  Police might ask for a description, which you might be able to provide, if you are not too shaken, or you can use a system that records images from security cameras around your property.  There are laws and guidelines about the use of security cameras, so contact Davenport PD for information about using cameras if you do it yourself.  Reputable security companies will follow local laws when setting up security systems.
